How to make it
1
Wash the potatoes
- Under running water, rub the potato skins with your hands to remove the dirt
- Put them on a cutting board and dig out any eyes (the parts growing from the dents) with the corner of the knife
- Do not peel them. It is fine if they are still wet
How to tell it's doneNo dirt is left on the surface, and the eyes are removed.
Be carefulGreen parts of the skin and the eyes can make you sick if you eat them. Cut those parts off thickly.
2
Wrap in plastic wrap and microwave
- Wrap each potato loosely in plastic wrap
- Put them on a microwave-safe plate and heat at 600 W for 3 minutes
- Take them out and turn them upside down (they are hot, so use oven mitts or a dry cloth), then heat at 600 W for 3 minutes more
How to tell it's doneWhen you touch the potatoes (through a cloth), they feel soft all over.
Be carefulFor just 1 potato, aim for 3 minutes + 1–2 minutes. At 500 W, use 1.2 times each time.
3
Check that they are soft
- Gently peel off the plastic wrap starting from the far side (steam comes out, so keep your face away)
- Poke a bamboo skewer (or chopsticks) into the thickest part
- If it feels hard, rewrap and heat more, 1 minute at a time
How to tell it's doneThe skewer slides easily all the way to the center.
4
Cut a slit and add butter
- Put a potato on the cutting board, hold it with a dry cloth, and cut a cross-shaped slit in the top (about halfway deep)
- Put it on a plate and lightly press from both sides through the cloth to open the slit
- Put 10 g butter on each potato and sprinkle a pinch of salt over them, divided. If you have it, add a pinch of black pepper
ReadyIt is ready to eat when the butter melts and soaks into the slit. It is hot, so eat carefully.
