How to make it
1
Prepare the asparagus
- Wash the asparagus. On the cutting board, cut off 1–2 cm of the hard end
- Thinly peel the skin about 5 cm up from the bottom with a peeler
- Cut in half crosswise (8 pieces in total)
How to tell it's doneThe 8 asparagus pieces are about the same length.
2
Wrap in bacon
- On the cutting board, cut each of the 4 bacon slices in half crosswise (8 pieces)
- Wrap 1 piece of bacon around the middle of 1 asparagus piece, at an angle, overlapping a little
- When all 8 are wrapped, set them on a plate with the seam side down
How to tell it's doneAll 8 are wrapped in bacon and don't come apart when you let go.
3
Cook seam side first
- Heat 1 tsp vegetable oil in a frying pan over medium heat
- Lay them in seam side down and cook for 1 minute without touching
- Once the bacon sticks, roll them with cooking chopsticks to cook all over
How to tell it's doneThe bacon shrinks and sticks to the asparagus, and the outside is browned.
Be carefulFat from the bacon splatters. Don't put your face too close.
4
Cover and cook through
- Add 1 tbsp water and put the lid on right away (it sizzles and steams)
- Steam-cook over low heat for 2 minutes
- Take off the lid. If there is still water, turn to medium heat for about 10 seconds to cook it off
How to tell it's doneA bamboo skewer goes in easily at the thick end of the asparagus. The white fat of the bacon is see-through and browned.
5
Cut and serve
- Put on a plate and sprinkle with a little pepper
- For a bento, cutting them in half on the cutting board makes them easier to pack
ReadyThe cut end shows green asparagus in the middle, with bacon around it.

If it didn't work out
The bacon came unwrappedYou didn't cook them seam side down. Cook for the first 1 minute without touching so the bacon sticks, then roll.
The asparagus is hardThe steam-cooking in step 4 was too short. Keep the lid on and add 1 minute at a time until a bamboo skewer goes in easily.
The bacon burnedThe heat is too high. Keep it at medium or lower and roll them often.
Too saltyThe bacon is salty. Use only pepper and don't add salt.
